„Small extracellular vesicle (sEV)-mediated communication between keratinocytes and immune cells contributes to allergic inflammation and pathogen spread in atopic dermatitis”
By forming epidermal layers, keratinocytes constitute the first line of defense from the environmental threats. However, we now know that their role is much more extensive than simply providing mechanical support to form a structural barrier, e.g., these cells can be very immunologically active. We showed that the communication between keratinocytes and immune cells, mediated by small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) is deeply altered in the context of atopic dermatitis (AD). This contributes to the vicious circle in the disease, by enhancing allergic inflammation and pathogen spread in the skin of the patients.
