Andrzej is specialized in bioenergetics studies of different organisms and received a doctoral degree in biological sciences in 2011 at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan. He is interested in nucleotide metabolism in the context of energy transduction efficiency in mitochondria and toxins affecting the OXPHOS apparatus. Respiratory chain components, including coenzyme Q pool and alternative oxidase (AOX), the uncoupling protein (UCP) representing an energy dissipation system, and nucleoside diphosphate kinase (NDPK), are the objects of his projects. The primary subject of his work is the kinetics of mitochondrial proton (H+) leak and protein/non-protein effectors affecting its magnitude. Plant biogeography, including algae ecology in relation to the mitochondria-sustained energy status of the cell, has recently become his additional scientific interest.

In his spare time, Andrzej travels and is passionate about exploring the seas and oceans of the world, as well as photographing nature.
