Maciej is a computational biologist. He finished his undergraduate studies at Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Poznań. After PhD he worked as a postdoc in in the group of Michael Zuker at the Washington University in St. Louis, MO and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. His research interests involved analysis of the RNA structure, building RNA databases (5S rRNA database, the first noncoding RNA databases), structure and practical applications of catalytic RNAs. Currently his research is focused on the genomic organization of the tRNA genes and tRNA-gene clusters and identification of genomic regions encoding tRNA-like structures.

Maciej’s additional interests involve history of research in molecular biology, problems of the origins of life on Earth and the history of the Middle Aages and World War II.
