Iza’s research is focused on the evolution and development of bryophytes. She finished her undergraduate studies and did her PhD at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. In her work she uses liverworts – Pellia endiviifolia and Marchantia polymorpha as well as moss– Physcomitrium patens as model genetic systems. Her scientific interests focus on genetic regulation of sex determination and sex differentiation which is crucial to achieve reproductive success. By generation of loss- and gain-of-function mutant lines the function of specific gene families (e.g, HMGbox, RAB, SPL transcription factors, MIR) is investigated.
Because of their ancient origins in comparison to vascular plants, bryophytes represent the living laboratory to study the genetic basis of diverse developmental processes which enabled them effective optimisation of the vegetative and reproductive activity in land conditions.
